Charlcote Panoramic

Charlcote Panoramic

I love the way the shadows of the trees branches seem to be creeping towards the house. It gives me the idea that the modern world is creeping up and slowly devouring the glorious past.

A panoramic view of the 16th century Charlcote House and stables.

Charlecote Park is a grand 16th century country house in a deer park on the banks of the River Avon in Wellesbourne, 6 km east of Stratford-upon-Avon and 9 km south of Warwick, Warwickshire, England. It has been administered by the National Trust since 1946 and is open to the public. It is a Grade I listed building

The Lucy family, who came to England with William the Conqueror, has owned the land since 1247. Charlecote Park was built in 1558 by Sir Thomas Lucy, and Queen Elizabeth I stayed in the room that is now the drawing room. Although the general outline of the Elizabethan house remains, nowadays it is in fact mostly Victorian. Successive generations of the Lucy family had modified Charlecote Park over the centuries, but in 1823, George Hammond Lucy (High Sheriff of Warwickshire in 1831) inherited the house and set about recreating the house in its original style.
A closer view of Charlecote Park dating from the 1820s.

In the middle of the 19th century the Fairfax Baronets inherited the property when the male line of the Lucy family failed on the death of Henry Spencer Lucy. The baronets changed their family name to Lucy to reflect the traditions of Charlecote.

The Great Hall has a barrel-vaulted ceiling made of plaster painted to look like timber and is a fine setting for the splendid collection of family portraits. Other rooms have richly coloured wallpaper, decorated plaster ceilings and wood panelling. There are magnificent pieces of furniture and fine works of art, including a contemporary painting of Queen Elizabeth I. The original two-storey Elizabethan gatehouse that guards the approach to the house remains unaltered.

Charlecote Park covers 185 acres (75 hectares), backing on to the Avon. William Shakespeare has been alleged to have poached deer in the park as a young man and been brought before magistrates as a result. But the park was not a deer park at that time. It was landscaped by Capability Brown in about 1760.

On display at the house is an original letter from Oliver Cromwell, dated 1654, summoning then owner Richard Lucy to the Barebone's Parliament. Also on display is a 1760 portrait of George Lucy by Thomas Gainsborough which cost Lucy the sum of eight guineas.

Paris - Musee d'Orsay: Paul Gauguin's Maison du Jouir

Paris - Musee d'Orsay: Paul Gauguin's Maison du Jouir

Paul Gauguin's Maison du Jouir, dating to 1901, is from the "porte d'entree de la Maison du Joiur, case de Gauguin a Hiva Oa, iles Marquises."

Gauguin lived out his last months at Atuona, on the Marquesas Islands, in a hut mounted on stilts, made of wood, palm leaves and bamboo. He decorated the door with a set of sculptured panels, directly hewn out of sequoia wood. The three horizontal panels bear inscriptions which reveal the artist's quest for a primitive golden age, an idea which haunted him until his death. Indeed, he gave the hut the provocative name of "Maison du Jouir" (house of sensual delight). The two lower panels seem to state the conditions to be met in order to reach this Eden: "Soyez mysterieuses" (be mysterious) and "Soyez amoureuses et vous serez heureuses" (find love and you will find happiness). The nudes and female torsos which illustrate these mottoes, sturdy and serene, are sculpted with rough, incisive strokes and set in a decor of flowers and animals. The voluptuous naivete of this work marks the beginnings of a primitivist aesthetic ideal which was developed to brilliant effect in the 20th century by artists such as Matisse, Derain, Lhote and Picasso.

The Musee d'Orsay (The Orsay Museum), housed in the former railway station, the Gare d'Orsay, holds mainly French art dating from 1848 to 1914, including paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography, and is probably best known for its extensive collection of impressionist masterpieces by popular painters such as Monet and Renoir. Many of these works were held at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume prior to the museum's opening in 1986.
